Senator backs criminal liability for compliance of US sanctions

MOSCOW, Apr 25 (PRIME) -- Andrei Klishas, chairman for the constitutional law committee at the Federation Council, the parliament’s upper house, supports the initiative to introduce criminal liability for compliance with the U.S. sanctions on the Russian territory, he told PRIME on Wednesday.

“Compliance with the regime of sanctions against Russia, which were introduced without a proper international legal procedure and in contradiction with the multilateral international agreements, should be considered as unlawful behavior. The Russian legislation should envisage proportional measures of criminal liability for violations of Russian citizens’ rights. In this connection, necessary amendments could be introduced to the Criminal Code,” Klishas said.

Andrei Isayev, first deputy head of the United Russia party in the State Duma, said on Tuesday that the parliament’s lower house will develop a bill to introduce criminal liability for individuals for compliance with the U.S. sanctions on the territory of Russia.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin earlier called for introducing liability, including criminal one, for those, who will be guided by anti-Russian decisions of foreign states in their activities on the territory of Russia.

On April 6, the U.S. imposed sanctions against 38 Russian tycoons, officials and companies. A bill on new countersanctions against the U.S. was submitted to the State Duma on April 13.
